12V & 24V systems

12-volt accessories on a 24-volt truck: what needs to match?

Understand supply voltage, accessory ratings, voltage converters and managed battery arrangements before adding equipment to a work vehicle.

Identify both sides of the connection

Start with two separate facts: the vehicle's actual supply arrangement and the accessory's permitted input. A nominal 24-volt vehicle supply and equipment designed only for nominal 12 volts are not interchangeable. Check the exact equipment label and manual. Some products accept a wider input range, but that must be stated for the model in front of you. A familiar connector is not evidence of electrical compatibility.

What a voltage converter does

REDARC describes converters that take a 24-volt source and provide a nominal 12-volt output for suitable loads. The converter is a specified device between the supply and the equipment. Selection still needs its input range, output characteristics and load capacity, not just the words 24 to 12. Ask for the exact model and which connected loads its rating is intended to support. A reducer does not make every accessory suitable for every installation.

Plan simultaneous use, not one accessory at a time

Make a list of the equipment that may operate together. Include lights, communication equipment, displays and any future addition already planned. Provide the manufacturers' electrical requirements rather than estimating from physical size. Keep an ordinary-use list separate from occasional equipment. This gives the installer a clear design brief and makes a later equipment change easier to assess instead of treating spare connectors as spare capacity.

Do not improvise a feed from one battery

REDARC's charge-equaliser product describes a managed arrangement for taking 12-volt power from the centre of a two-battery 24-volt system while maintaining charge balance. Its purpose and installation requirements matter. The existence of that product is not permission to connect an accessory to whichever battery is easiest to reach. Have the existing system identified and the appropriate supply method chosen for the vehicle and loads.

Keep a useful installation record

Request a record that identifies what supplies each accessory and what the equipment is intended to do. Retain the manuals with the vehicle or fleet file. If another installer later adds a camera or radio, provide that information before connections are changed. These are planning questions, not instructions for working on batteries, protection devices or vehicle wiring.

  • Vehicle and accessory models, including their specified input ranges.
  • The chosen converter or other managed supply arrangement.
  • Which equipment is included and what simultaneous use was allowed for.
  • Operating instructions, relevant limitations and who to ask before adding more equipment.
